Broadway Sunday Bonus is a new program of Broadway Theatre in Vista, California, designed to showcase playwrights of the San Diego area. This is in addition to Broadway's already eventful and exciting schedule of both adult and children's theatre. These showcases will be scheduled for certain Sunday evenings to coincide with selected regular productions of the theatre.
The San Diego area is home to many playwrights whose work is produced not just locally but throughout the nation and even in other countries. This is an opportunity to become acquainted with some of these writers and their work. And when we say "become acquainted," we mean just that because the playwrights will be in attendance so you can meet them and chat about the plays you've just seen in a discussion period following the performances.
You may see one-act or full-length plays, musicals or revues. You'll see something a little (or, maybe, a lot) different from what you see in the regular Broadway Theatre productions, held to the same professional performance standards that Broadway Theatre audiences are accustomed to. And it's affordable!
Check below to see what's coming up next and what's already been done. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Pull of Paradise (COMEDY)   Myrna Jean claims that Freddie Mae has done her a grievous wrong and insists they must now go their separate ways. With more wiliness than wisdom, Mama finds the solution that keeps everything together.
Love can be strained till it almost breaks and end up being stronger than ever.

FEATURING Katherine Forbes, Jude Morgan & Lucy Ann Albert
DIRECTED BY Ximena Paola Herschberg

A Certain Unsoundness of Mind (DRAMA)   A college professor discovers the true talents of one of his students and attempts to set the course for the young man's future. But the student has very different ideas.
Without giving answers, the story poses the questions: What is the value of Art? What is the artist's responsibility to self and others?

FEATURING Ralph Johnson & Ciceron Altarejos
DIRECTED BY Jeffrey Ingman

To Hear a Distant Tune (DRAMA WITH COMEDY)   A brother and sister, now in their retirement years, have lived together comfortably for many years. But the peacefulness of one of their leisurely summer days is torn asunder by the return of a former boarder whose request threatens all they have and are.
The play is about the truth of relationships to those who value them, and the relationship of truth to those who doubt it.

FEATURING Lucy Ann Albert, Michael Thomas Tower & Katherine Forbes
DIRECTED BY Ximena Paola Herschberg

In the 13 years Mr. Tower has been writing plays, he has written a dozen one-act plays and a half dozen full-length ones. He's had productions in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York and other U.S. cities. His newest full-length play, The Residents, is in development now.
As composer, co-lyricist and co-librettist, he is collaborating in the writing of two musicals, and recently contributed several songs to a burlesque revue.
He directed one of George Soete's short plays in the last Broadway Sunday Bonus and will be directing another of Mr. Soete's plays in the Actors Alliance Festival in July. He's directed pieces in the last two North Park Playwrights Festivals in San Diego.
Still enjoying the occasional acting gig, Michael was most recently seen in Broadway Theatre's The Dining Room. He is a member of San Diego Actors Alliance and Dramatists Guild.
He's the father of four, grandfather of five, and was a long-time resident of the San Francisco area before moving, three years ago, to San Diego where he lives with his partner.

MARCH 12 & 19, 2006
FEATURING SIX SHORT PLAYS
by

GEORGE SOETE

Delighted audiences were enthusiastic in their response to Mr. Soete's work, which ranged from the wildly hilarious to the movingly poignant. There couldn't have been a better group of plays, as expertly performed as they were, to kick off the Broadway Sunday Bonus series. Thanks to George and his outstanding casts! The following is a peek at what excited the audiences.

ADAM: If you really want me to go, I will.  But after all we have been through . . .
EVELYN: We've known each other two months. We really haven't been through all that much.

THATCHER: Have you noticed?  No one calls.  No one stops by.
LOIS: Who, dear?
THATCHER: The people who don't call. Or stop by.
LOIS: People stop by. And they call.
THATCHER: Who? Who stops by?
LOIS: Howard. He stops by.
THATCHER: He's our lawyer. We pay him to stop by.

The Elixir of Genius

Lori Pennington &
Jonathan Sachs

LAURA: Jesus, Jake, you look awful. What have you been doing all morning? Never mind. I don't want to be depressed. Have you hit a slump again, honey? Did you take your medication this morning? If I know you, you haven't even had a shower.
JAKE: Who are you?

The things I refuse to stint on: Nails. Hair. Clothes! If I'm having one of those days -- you know, when you can't find a thing in your closet -- I hop on the Concorde. You must go to Paris. Anywhere else is Dubuque in disguise. I won't stint on tipping either. You hand someone five hundred dollars and they lift an eyebrow.  It's embarrassing.

Love Spam
with

Directed by

GERTRUDE: Have you ever deliberate how much an ordinary man pays for his medicament?  Anodynes, drugs to meliorate the choice of real life, weight trim pharmaceuticals, and many more. I conduct you the same remedy, the vegetative reading the equivalent class, the equal recipe at a greatly judicious price. --Gertrude Angwah
MAN: Dear Ms. Angwah: At first I thought to toss your poem in the wastebasket, but something -- a wisp of ether or nothing, perhaps -- encircled and tugged at my digits.  Have you ever had destiny knock at the portal of your domicile?

Dad's lunch was invariable: a bologna sandwich with a slice of Velveeta and mustard on crustless Wonder Bread. Toward the end, when he couldn't manage the sandwiches, I tried substitutes. But he refused to eat them. Finally, I hit on the idea of making a bologna smoothie.
